Stonehenge
So you're at ancient Stonehenge ready for the start of a magical mystery tour to the historic city of Exeter. So say bye-bye to the Druids, check your tyre pressures... and we're off!
You are about to undertake a magical, mystical journey – from Stonehenge, the ancient and sacred site - westward to the cathedral city of Exeter. Along the way, we'll suggest stop-offs to keep the family entertained, fed and watered. So come with us, along the A303 and the M5 (plus a couple of wiggly bits), a trip that will transport you across thousands of years... and if the traffic's on your side, it only takes a couple of hours or so! (Not including stop-off times of course).
So you're at ancient Stonehenge ready for the start of a magical mystery tour to the historic city of Exeter. So say bye-bye to the Druids, check your tyre pressures... and we're off!
The adventure begins... head west from Stonehenge on the A303, towards the A358 turnoff. Now, you can either play the number plate game until you go completely crackers... or stop-off en route at fascinating places, including Fleet Air Arm Museum and Barrington Court Tudor mansion, which has an annual chutney festival.
At last you're off the A303 and travelling north-west towards Taunton at Junction 25 of the M5 motorway. Stop off at Hatch Beauchamp for a bite to eat either at The Hatch Inn or the nearby Farthings Country House Hotel & Restaurant. Stay the night if you fancy a couple of local ciders. If you want to plough on then Taunton is just up the road. Being the county town of Somerset there's lots to do and see here.
Park the car and let the train take the strain...
Just off the M5 junction 25 near Taunton is the West Somerset Railway terminus staion of Bishops Lydeard. Park the car up in the free car park and take a trip back in time on an original steam locomotive. There's loads to see along the line with a station for every taste.
Turn off the M5 at junction 27 and follow the A361 into the medieaval market town of Tiverton. The town sits at the confluence of the rivers Exe and Lowman and boasts many remarkable old buildings and also an orignal art deco cinema called the Tivoli. Catch a road trip film if you can!
The last part of the road trip takes you south out of Tiverton along the picturesque route of the A396 towards your final destination of Exeter. You can check out the beautiful little village of Bickleigh on the way - visit the working Georgian watermill or have a bite to eat at The Fisherman's Cot, which is right on the River Exe.
