EXETER

Bickleigh is a pretty little Devonshire village situated in the Exe valley. Of special historical interest is a medieval bridge that crosses the River Exe by the weir. A popular local myth states that the bridge inspired Paul Simon to write Bridge Over Troubled Water. Whether true or not it is known that Simon stayed in the village in the 1960s.

Bickleigh Castle

Mentioned in the Doomsday book, Bickleigh Castle - with its 14th century gatehouse - can be traced back to Norman times. In the seventeeth century Bickleigh Castle was the family home of the Carew family. The Castle has beautiful gardens and a tea room and provides tours from the beginning of April to the end of October.

Bickleigh Mill

Forecourt with tables and facade of the building.

Bickleigh Mill was built in the 18th Century and was working right up until 1960 when floods devastated it. The Mill and surrounding land became part of the Devonshire Centre with crafts, a working farm and the mill. Today Bickleigh Mill is very popular not only for its huge range of crafts and gifts to suit any taste, but for its idyllic river walks and the traditional atmosphere and delicious food available at the restaurant set in the Old Mill House.

Devon Railway Centre

The site of the Devon Railway Centre was originally the site of Bickleigh Station, which was built in 1885 by the South Devon Railway. The station was closed in 1963 and the station was boarded up. The site was taken over by the Devon Railway Centre in 1997 and restoration and laying down of the narrow gauge track began.

The project is the work primarily of the Gicquel family along with a small group of dedicated volunteers. The Centre was opened to the public in 1998, with the picnic and wildlife areas being developed in 1999. Further extensions in 2000 and 2006 saw the addition of the miniature railway and the Edwardian Model Village. Today the Devon Railway Centre has developed into one of Devon’s popular tourist attractions.

Admission includes unlimited train rides, model village, model railways, model funfair, Wheal Beckie Mine, indoor soft play area, outdoor play areas, museum and riverside picnic site.
