Further along the large shed, which was formerly situated at the Great Western Railway’s Swindon Workshops is the home of West Somerset Restoration who repair and overhaul steam engines and other vintage machinery for both the Railway and other owners. Please note that workshops are not normally open to the public.
Williton Station
Trains passing through Williton station have been under the control of the same signal box ever since the line opened in 1862 and it is now the only working example built by the Bristol and Exeter Railway.
Williton is a small working town with its centre a twenty minute walk from the station, whilst the fascinating Bakelite Museum is thirty minutes away. Back at the station the years since 1979 have seen major engineering developments. The Diesel and Electric Preservation Group has developed their workshops as their fleet of 1950’s and 1960’s diesel locomotives has grown and the Heritage Centre opens at weekends and during Gala Weekends.
At the start of 2011 a footbridge was erected at Williton station, replacing one taken down by British Rail before the line was closed. Much work is still needed to complete it but find-raiding is progressing towards its completion in memory of the late Chris van den Arend. Chris was one of the pioneers of the West Somerset Railway in the 1970’s and the re-instatement of the footbridge was the last major project he oversaw, combining it with being the Williton station master.
Williton is the fourth station on the West Somerset Railway.
